Mud oozing beneath her feet, Annie looked up towards the clear blue sky with joy. Annie was headed with the heard towards the open grasslands. Annie desperately wanted to run, feeling renewed energy from the blooming landscape. Annie ran her eyes over the thinned herd, knowing not all had the energy to run lost in their own worlds of winter. Two foals had be lost, and a young mare. Annie understand the pain of losing a dear one in the winter, two winters ago her best friend was gone. Annie felt she lived on bided time, older than every horse in the herd. Pulling herself out of her remorseful thoughts, Annie focused on the songs of birds exclaiming spring. Swiveling her ears around, Annie tried to catch every sound of spring. Annie danced around in circles, refusing to obay the air of disapproval that seemed to follow her. Annie froze, spotting a deer who mirrored her lack of movement. Annie whinnied encouragingly, but it scampered off. Annie broke into a ground covering trot that was unnecessary to catch up with the rest of the herd. Three strides and Annie slowed down to her companions flat footed walk. Annie sighed, knowing it would take all morning to reach the grasslands at that pace. Feeling a bit drained though, she complied to the pace but happily took in the forests spring.
