What A Beautiful Mess I Made
Bright, glowing beams of sunlight rested gently upon shimmering grains of snowy white sand. The gentle, comforting sound of small waves meeting earth filled the land, along with the pleasant chirps of the nearby birds. Tall grasses swayed slowly in the slight breeze that pulled in the sharp, salty aroma of the ocean. Nzuri liked loved it here. All of the equines that she had seen around here were pregnant mares and newborn foals; no cruel stags nearby to ruin the peace and calm. Everyone had seemed friendly enough, not that Nzuri had approached any of them (and while she mentally blamed this on the fact that they were bonding with their young she knew it was because she didn't really feel comfortable talking to anyone that she didn't already know). The young vixen kept waiting for someone to push her out of these peaceful lands and force her to live somewhere else; an event that was dreaded but inevitable. Who was she to hang out here forever? She certainly wasn't giving birth, and she was sure the mares didn't appreciate equines lurking nearby, no matter how young or kind.
Nzuri stood at the edge of the water, an occasional larger wave kissing her small hoofs before retreating back into the ocean. Wisps of her golden hued mane and tail fluttered in the salty breeze, her soft brown eyes scanned the horizon. The sun was beginning to lower in the sky, leaving shades of pink on the pillowy clouds. The fem took a deep breath and then sighed. Time to find some shelter for the night she supposed, and turned to the left. As she walked Nzuri could feel the sand sink beneath her hoofs, and eventually give way to dirt. The grass grazed lightly across her pelt, tickling her legs and catching in her tail. She figured that some sort of isolated cave would be best, but all the ones she knew of had been taken by another equine, and she was definitely not about to start any arguments with anybody. Nzuri always figured it was better to avoid confrontation, or even talking if possible. Why should she even try to argue when she would certainly lose? She often wondered what it was like to feel powerful, like some of the mares she had met in her life. They never backed down; always ready to stand up for what they believe in. How did they manage to be so courageous? Did anything scare them? The mare didn't know, but either way she envied them. It must be nice to be able to walk around and not fear every shadow, to be able to face the unknown and not shake with uncertainty. Someday, perhaps, she could be one of them (ha), but for now, sticking with what she knew and staying away from any sort of hidden danger was her plan.
A few minutes into her walk, she happened upon a small, dense group of trees, all of them twisted and woven together into a giant maze of foliage. Nzuri thought it might turn out to be a good shelter, and quickly made her way towards it. Most of the trees were tightly woven together, but the small mare wedged her way in between a couple of them, and was pleased to find that the center of the mass was cleared out, with nothing but a few twigs on the ground. The space was small, perhaps enough room for 3 equines to stand comfortably, but any more than that and it would be far too crowded. The foliage surrounding was dense and hard to see through, and Nzuri felt safe here. She briskly flattened out a small patch of grass and laid down to rest, anxiously wondering what the next day might bring.

Hoku
"Sweet dreams are made of these? Who am I to disagree?"
The filly made her way to the shore the suns warm rays penetrating her caramel honey coat relaxing her muscles. The air as filled with a moist salt scent and it tickled the fea's nares and she threw her head and snorted in pure delight. The air was full of moisture hinting that there was a threat of a late night rain and it invigorated the young desert mare. She had been here for about a week or two but she learnt to stay away from the pregnant mares and the mares with the new foals. They didn't appreciate the young equine's presence, they usually called her rowdy and nosy. But the filly was only innocently observing the bonding pairs. The fem walked over to a little hill over the sea and stood there enjoying the cooling breeze on her face and the fading warmth on her coat.
Hoku opened her eyes to see a mother and her young foal playing on the shore side. The foal was a paint and it had draft blood lines either from the father or the mother (or both). A smile came to her maw when the foal threw its small head and whinnied shrilly and kicked his hind legs up to the sky and took off in a dead run with his little tail a flag behind him, his mother whickered softly and followed closely behind. The small filly watched the pair with a slight sadness, she too had a mother like that; and a father. But they both disappeared in the early years of her life leaving the small filly to raise and fend for herself. Her mother was a beautiful bay mare with a black mane and flaxen tips and big beautiful doe eyes, her father was a bright palomino with a stark white mane and tail, his eyes were so green and loving. The filly snorted and made her way down the embankment and walked down the sodden shore line walking up and down it a short ways.
The waves would sometimes reach her small delicate hooves, the sound she loved most, it was the sound of the lulling crash of the waves on the sandy shore. The cool breeze picked up slightly making the scent of salt and sand stronger and it made her chocolate mane flutter around her face and eyes. Her unique eyes caught the glitter, sparkling light off the ocean as the sun sunk down to its knees making the sky and sea pink tinted. The clouds where wispy and cotton like as the strong winds above the ground swirled and shaped them. The moon quickly rose to its full height, it was full, the filly basked in the silver fibers of the moon light and she sighed softly her eyes fluttering slightly.
Hoku watched as the mothers and their foals took shelter in the tree line of the twisted and gnarled branches of the mangroves trees and or hidden caves around the shore line leaving the young mare alone. The moon shone brighter as the filly thought of where to seek shelter. The older mares would not appreciate a young equine such as Hoku to share their shelter. The filly continued to walk slowly down the soaked shore line her small hooves sinking slightly into the hard packed sand battered and buffed by the relentless waves.
The waves lulled the little mare to where her feet, head and body felt heavy. She was in a slight daze when a thick patch of trees caught her attention. It looked like it wasn't occupied at the moment so she jumped at the chance to finally have a shelter of her own. It was small enough to fit at least three equines of her height and size comfortably. The filly wound through the twisted branches and vines finally finding a spot where the moonlight peeked through the leaves onto a tall soft patch of grass.
Hoku made her way over to the patch before she notice the unmistakable scent of another equine. She shied slightly into the shadows concealing her body but not her scent, her eyes frantically searched the darkness before her for any remote signs of movement. She blew out a burst of air from her nares and she searched the gnarled branches before her once again with her unique eyes before getting on her knees and finally laying down in the tall grass. Her gazed fixed upon the stars burning above her and it slowly lulled the mare into a sleep. Her dreams where filled of foals and companionship and she anxiously wondered what the next day brung.
